Seminar Registration Deadline December 4, 2009 2010 Seminar Scheduled for June 18-20 at Whittier College |
Each high school has its own process for nominating and selecting students to attend HOBY. Have your child express to his/her high school counselor his/her interest in attending HOBY. If the counselor is unfamiliar with HOBY, you can direct them to www.hoby.org for information about selecting and registering a student.
Congratulations! More detailed information about dates, times, & locations of the Seminar, as well as items to bring, will be given in the Frequently Asked Questions for Registered HOBY Students PDF on the Forms to Download page in early to mid-April. Registered students will be notified by email once this information is available. Make sure to mark the program dates on your calendar and get ready for a memorable experience!

Yes, students registered in a HOBY program must be present for the entire event, including overnight. Absolutely! All HOBY programs have a minimum of one adult (21 years or older) for every 12 students at all times. HOBY Los Angeles regularly exceeds these requirements and students are never left unattended or allowed to walk across campus or the seminar site without supervision.
All HOBY programs have strict rules against hazardous activities and use of drugs, tobacco, etc. Students are closely supervised at all times. Additionally, HOBY Los Angeles regularly has off-duty law enforcement officers and EMTs on its senior on-site staff to assist in the unlikely case of injury ilnesses or other emergencies. Please be sure to sign a medical release so any required treatment at a local facility is not delayed.
You will be asked to provide information about your child’s medication on program materials emailed to you in early to mid-April, as well as provide a doctor’s note with your child. Our Policy for Use of Medication During a HOBY Event will be included with the medication forms and posted separately with the Forms to Download.
Dress is casual throughout the weekend. It may be hot in June and students will be walking across campus in groups and should dress in comfortable school-appropriate attire and appropirate footwear. Upon check-in, students will be provided a HOBY t-shirt to be worn Friday. Friday night will include a dance/mixer/service project where students may want to have some an additional change of clothes for. On Sunday, students should bring more formal clothes ("Sunday dress") in preparation for the Closing Ceremony. Boys traditionally wear a button down shirt (tie optional) with dress slacks or khakis, while girls wear a nice blouse or dress.
No money is required; all scheduled activities and meals have been paid for in full through the generous donations of individuals, businesses and local volunteer groups. However, there will be a HOBY marketplace with items such as phots, books DVDs etc. on Sunday after the Closing Ceremony where you may buy HOBY-related items but everything is purely optional.
